Livingston Manor, NY – St. Aloysius R.C. Church, in the hamlet, is celebrating its 125th anniversary. The congregation is hosting a special celebration to commemorate the occasion on Sunday, Aug.18, and all are welcome to attend and celebrate with the parishioners.
Located at 22 Church Street, St. Aloysius Church was founded on property donated by A.P. DuBois in 1896. The church opened in 1899. Then, in the early 1900s, its priest worked with the Dominican Sisters to have a convent built to house nuns helping St. Aloysius serve the Livingston Manor community. The sisters established a school shortly thereafter for grades 1 through 8. According to Shirley Fulton, a lifelong member of the church, “It was during this same time period that the hotel industry really started building up in the area, and the church was able to help support the influx of people during the summer months.”
Along with St. Aloysius Church, the parish includes Gate of Heaven Church in Roscoe, and Sacred Heart Chapel in DeBruce, which are both open seasonally. Father Edward Bader has been leading the church for the past 12 years and has been especially well received by the parishioners. Father Antony David has been the priest for the past several years and helped get the parish through the COVID pandemic.
You can hear more about the founding of St. Aloysius, the role it’s played in Livingston Manor history, and more by attending the 125th Commemorative Mass, at 9 a.m. on Aug. 18. At 3 p.m, there will be a potluck dinner, complete with live music, lawn games and plenty of joyful conversation. If you wish to participate, you can sign up at the church to bring a dish. If you wish to volunteer for the planning committee, please call the church at 845-439-5625 or Shirley Fulton at 845-439-1169 for more information.
