CAS show offers diverse, playful works by 4

Livingston Manor, NY – The four artists whose work is currently on exhibit at Catskill Art Space in this hamlet, while differing in their approach to aesthetic presentation, all share a sense of whimsy and even humor.
Sculptor Amy Yoes’ “vitrines” are tall cabinets filled with busy arrangements of lighted wooden shapes painted in various shades of gray. But they also contain false eyelashes, wire mesh and other amusing odds and ends.
Samantha Modder’s floor-to-ceiling drawings, seemingly rendered right on the gallery walls, illustrate a “Black woman’s fairytale,” a fanciful saga of lost hairbands and comfy socks. The originals, remarkably, Modder draws in conventional ballpoint pen.
Sharing the space of Gallery 3 are photographers Lenore Malen and Debra Pearlman. Malen’s pictures capture moments of role playing in performances by friends and colleagues, including Gary Indiana, and Pearlman’s clever “street photography” images have been imprinted on aluminum, cut out and bent to return their flattened moments to three dimensions. “It’s their gestures that interest me, their spontaneity,” Pearlman said of her articulated images.
The exhibit runs through June 22. CAS is at 48 Main Street; visit catskillartspace.org for gallery hours.
