Roscoe, NY – The classic game of chess dates back ages and is played by enthusiasts all the way from youngsters to elders in every circumstance, from national tournaments to local games with family and friends.

Recently Manor Ink reporters Elias Horn (who played) and Kara Didrich (who took pictures), and mentor Teresa Tulipano (who cheered), went to a chess tournament in Roscoe at The Roscoe Collective on Thursday, May 14. It was hosted by Axel Robinson, a barber and owner of Axel’s Barbershop & Shave Parlor on Stewart Avenue, right next to the Collective. Robinson is also an avid chess player.

The tournament had a total of seven rounds, each of them played against a new player. Between the rounds, players could revisit their games to see where they went wrong and get in a little practice while waiting for the next round. Once all players had finished their games, the next round would start.

Overall, the chess tournament went well and many people came and played. The winner of the competition was Lee from Downsville, himself a certified grand master of the game. Chess competitions are a great way to get good at playing, but playing with family and friends can also hone board skills. Robinson was pleased with the success of this first tournament, and the participants shared his enthusiasm. “I’d like to make this experience a once-a-month event, open for everyone,” Robinson said.
