Livingston Manor, NY – October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and the Livingston Manor Central School Student Council decided to help raise funds for a local non-profit organization called Ride2Survive during the school’s annual Spirit Week. The organ-ization gives cancer patients gas cards to help them get to and from their chemotherapy and medical appointments (see a related article on page 10).

Various activities held from Oct. 12 through Oct. 15 helped raise awareness of the disease and, in true Spirit Week fashion, the competitive nature between the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior classes kept it fun. Each day, students dressed according to a theme. Tuesday was “Pink Day,” Wednesday was “Tie-Dye/Neon Day,” Thursday was “Professional Day” and Friday was “Decade Day.” Each class’s participation was recorded for the competition. For this year’s event, juniors took first place, followed by the seniors in second, sophomores in third and the freshmen finished fourth.

In another activity, each grade was given pink ribbons to hand out to anyone who made a donation to Ride2Survive. Sophomores came in first place by collecting a whopping $1,049. Seniors followed in second place with $389, Juniors in third with $266 and Freshmen, in fourth place, collected $230. Overall, $2,000 was raised for Ride2Survive.

“We appreciate everyone’s participation,” said LMCS Student Council President Julia Trotti. “We raised awareness about breast cancer and the competition between classes definitely helped to raise a lot of money.”

“The High School Student Council would like to thank every student, class advisor, staff and community member that participated in Spirit Week,” added Student Council advisor Jillian Hoag. “Together, we were able to exceed our fundraising goal and contribute to a very important and worthy cause.”.
