CAS reopens its galleries to visitor accolades

Livingston Manor, NY – It was the debut of a world class exhibition space just as much as it was a gala opening featuring work by internationally renowned artists.

FINE ART A detail from “Wall Drawing #991” by Sol LeWitt.

When the newly christened Catskill Art Space on Main Street in this hamlet finally opened its doors to the public on Saturday, Oct. 22, visitors found themselves marveling not only at the art, but also at expansive new galleries with their white walls, floor-to-ceiling windows and polished floors. The second floor, previously unused raw space, has been transformed into three large showrooms for ongoing displays of work by James Turrell, Sol LeWitt and Francis Cape. On the ground level, bright sun through new picture windows illuminated large manipulated photos by Ellen Brooks.

Many visitors were especially impressed by Turrell’s piece “Avaar,” a subtle work on a grand scale that is displayed in complete darkness and only gradually becomes visible.

The second floor exhibits are on extended loan to CAS through 2027. First floor shows are temporary and will change periodically. The current exhibit of work by Ellen Brooks will be on display through December. To learn more about the Catskill Art Space’s exhibits and programs, visit catskillartspace.org.
